11.10.08 / 1st team
RC Zug - RFC Basel 7:30
The first win of the season finally arrived in Zug with a comfortable 30-7 victory. First of all, the club owe a debt of thanks to Joerg Brude who once again donned his boots to help out the club. Without Joerg's help we would have been forced into forfeiting the game due to insufficient trained front rows. Even with Joerg stepping in, we still landed in Zug with only 16 players.
The game itself was regularly interrupted due to the referee's zealous interpretation of the rucking laws. Both sides struggled to adapt and gave away numerous penalties for hands in the ruck and going off their feet.
Fabrice opened the scoring with his 1st try for the 1st team with a break following some good phase play from the forwards. Try two came from Tims line break on half way, who fed Tibor to run clear. Converted by Juan. A further penatly from Juan took us to half time with a comfortable 15-0 lead.
Three inexplicable missed tackles resulted in field position for Zug who spun the ball the length of the line giving them an overlap from which they scored a converted try. The response was instant though. A great team try was created from another great line break by Tim taking us into the 22. The ball was recycled quickly by the backs and fed back across field to the forwards. 2 pick and drives later had us camped on the try line. The referee awarded us a 5m scrum from which Juan picked up at the base and stretched out of the tackle to score.
Juan popped over a penalty and Josh finished off the scoring when he chipped over the line and recovered to score and gain us the 4 try bonus point.
Overall a good team performance. The defence was solid on the whole. The forwards recycled well and provided the backs with enough ball to create several scoring chances. Villain of the day had to be Kai, who was yellow carded for a high tackle. There were several candidates for man of the match. Henrik as usual was everywhere. But the award went to the virgin try scorer Fabrice, mainly for his stirling defensive work.
