Ab 21. November 2009 legen die Mannschaften des RFC Basel eine Winterpause ein – Ausnahme:
Die Junioren trainieren bis zum 26. November, bevor auch sie in den Winterschlaf gehen. Die erste Mannschaft wird die Trainingspause jeweils am Donnerstag mit Body pump im Fitnessplus überbrücken – dies steht allen RFCB-Mitgliedern offen. Sobald das Training wieder beginnt, werden wir an dieser Stelle informieren (das Future Team jedenfalls beginnt mit dem Training am 12. Januar 2010).
As per 21 November the RFC Basel teams will go into the winter break – exception: The juniors will continue training until 26 November before they start hibernating. The 1st XV will bridge the break with body pump in Fitnessplus on Thursdays – this is open to all RFCB members. We will inform you as soon as training starts again (the Future Team players already know their training start – it’s 12 January 2010).

From May 2007, all our home games and Summer half year training Sessions moved to the Pruntrutermatte. Training sessions are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 19.00 hrs (Seniors). 1st XV 19.00 - 21.00 hrs. (link to more detail follows).

Die Geschichte des Vereins
Es geschah im Jahre 1975, dass die Fédération Suisse de Rugby den Rugby Football Club Basel als Mitglied aufnahm. Obwohl streng genommen der Verein ein Jahr zuvor gegründet worden war, gilt 1975 als das Jahr, in dem der Club zur Welt kam. Gezeugt wurde der Verein eigentlich 1974, und sogar sein erstes Spiel fand 1974 gegen Neuchâtel statt – welches er übrigens gewann. Um mit dem Bild weiterzufahren: Die «Erzeuger» setzten sich aus einer Gruppe mehrheitlich englischsprechender Spieler zusammen, die gemäss Legende die ersten Vereinsstatuten auf eine Papierserviette kritzelten. All dies geschah angeblich nach einem üblichen Treffen eines Darts-Clubs an einem Donnerstag Abend, in den tiefsten Tiefen eines Lokals, welches damals «Warteck Pub» hiess – heute nennt es sich «Mr. Pickwick Pub». Dabei handelt es sich um einen unserer Hauptsponsoren, und er wird nach wie vor häufig von den Vereinsmitgliedern besucht.
In den frühen Jahren des Clubs gehörten Schweizer Mitglieder einer Minderheit an. Die Spieler kamen aus aller Welt. Das änderte sich im Laufe der Jahre beträchtlich. Spieler kamen (und kommen) zwar immer noch aus allen Ecken dieser Welt, bei manchen könnte man sogar sagen, sie seien von jenseits dieser Welt. Mitte der achtziger Jahre drangen jedoch einheimische Spieler – geboren in der Schweiz, mit Schweizer Eltern – in die erste Mannschaft vor. Heute ist der RFC Basel durch den steten Nachschub junger Spieler einer der reichsten Clubs in der Schweiz, was das spielerische Potenzial betrifft. Zahlreiche unserer Spieler haben auf verschiedenen Ebenen das Schweizer Trikot getragen – bei den Aktiven, bei den Cadets und bei Juniorenkategorien darunter.
Weil Rugby ‘Randsport’ in der Schweiz ist (der sich aber langsam in Richtung Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit bewegt), wurde der Club lange Zeit hin- und hergeschoben. Der RFCB trug seine ersten Heimspiele auf verschiedenen Plätzen aus: Pruntrutermatte, Kleinhüningen und Breite, um nur ein paar zu nennen. Häufig fand das Training jeweils am Samstagvormittag in Grenzach-Wyhlen (Deutschland) statt. 1982 zog der Club auf die Sportanlagen St. Jakob um (und blieb dort sogar für ein Vierteljahrhundert). Im Jahre 2007 jedoch – um mit dem Bild zu Beginn weiterzufahren – kehrte der Club jedoch wieder in seine Wiege auf der Pruntrutermatte zurück, und alle unsere Mitglieder hoffen, dass er nun dort bleiben kann.
Die Mitglieder des Rugby Football Clubs Basel geniessen alle Seiten dieser faszinierenden Sportart: Sie schauen sich die Spiele unserer Mannschaft an, daheim und auswärts, geniessen die dritte Halbzeit (wer nicht im Rugby?) und nehmen an unseren gesellschaftlichen Anlässen teil. Kurz: Der RFC Basel ist ein Amateurverein, der Sinn und Geister dieser Sportart in vielerlei Form in einem weiten Kreis fördern möchte. Dies bedeutet aber auch: Wer professionelle Entlöhnung erwartet, soll sich bitte anderweitig nach Clubs mit entsprechenden Strukturen umschauen.

26.06.2009 The History of the Club
It was in 1975 the Rugby Football Club Basel became a member of the Fédération Suisse de Rugby. Although strictly speaking the club was founded a year before that, 1975 is now considered as the year the club officially came to life. The club was actually conceived in 1974, and indeed their first friendly was in 1974 against Neuchâtel which, incidentally, Basel won. To continue with this imagery, the «procreators» were a group of mostly English speaking players who – as legend has it – scribbled the first statutes of the club onto a paper napkin. All this apparently happened after a then regular Thursday’s darts club evening in the depths of what was in those days called the «Warteck Pub» – today it’s called «Mr. Pickwick Pub», one of our main sponsors, and still frequented by current members of our club.
In those early years, Swiss members of the club were a minority. Players were recruited from all over the world. This changed considerably over the years. Players came (and are still coming) from all corners of the earth; some you could say even seemed to come from out of this world. And by the mid eighties home-grown players – Swiss by birth, from Swiss parents – started to make their way into the 1st team. Nowadays, due to the steady influx of young players, RFC Basel is one of the richest clubs in terms of potential. Many of our players have already represented Switzerland at various levels – senior, cadet, and younger categories.
Being a ‘fringe’ sport in Switzerland (albeit slowly trying to edge towards the centre of attention) also meant the club was pushed around a bit over the years. The RFCB played their first home matches at various grounds, Pruntrutermatte, Kleinhüningen and Breite, to name but a few. On many occasions training was on a Saturday morning in Grenzach-Whylen, Germany. Later the club managed to move to St. Jakob (and actually staying there for a quarter of a century). However, in 2007 – to continue with the image at the beginning – the club managed to return to its cradle, at Pruntrutermatte, and all members hope the club is there to stay.
The members of Rugby Football Club Basel enjoy all aspects of this fascinating sport: they watch our team matches both at home and away, relish the third half-time (who doesn’t in rugby?) and take part in our social events. In short, the RFC Basel is an amateur sports club, promoting the spirit of rugby to all and sundry.
