B’s Tournament
The B’s opened the day, supported by seven players from Thun and featuring four debutants. Congratulations to Salome, Nelly, Patricia and Anna on their first ever matches for Basel!
The first game, a 7s match against Winterthur, went brilliantly. The B’s kept a clean sheet and secured a confident 29 to 0 win.
The second match, a 12 a side game against Würenlos, was more challenging. Although Würenlos were not necessarily stronger on an individual level, their structured play and well organised moves gave them the advantage. The final score was 41 to 0.
The B’s tournament ended with a friendly match involving all teams. A group of cold, wet but smiling women walked off the pitch together.
Birds vs Switzers
After a delay caused by the Switzers being stuck in traffic, it was time for the Birds to take the field. The plan was to start strong and aggressively, and for the first few minutes that worked perfectly. Unfortunately, the Switzers backs broke through the defensive line to score the opening try. The rest of the first half was evenly matched. Basel answered with a try from Mirjam, bringing the halftime score to 5 to 12.
In the second half, the Birds continued to fight with real determination. The forwards in particular put in an outstanding shift. Their work rate was exceptional throughout the entire match. The backs played strongly in defense too, but struggled to find solutions against the Switzers' fast, fit and well organised defence. Just Orla managed to score a try down the left wing, converted by Lizzy for an equal score or 12 points apiece.
Unfortunately, the Birds could not convert their forward momentum into another try and Switzers managed to score twice more, meaning the match ended 26 to 12 in favour of Switzers. It was a tough result that does not reflect the quality and intensity of the Birds’ effort.
The day concluded in true rugby fashion with beer, good company and the final Six Nations matches at the clubhouse.
