0-0. No scores at half-time. The signs of a proper arm wrestle between two of the best teams in the league. Last Saturday's match between the Rugby Basel Men's 1st XV and Lugano in NLB had exactly that. Struggling against a very solid Lugano scrum, Basel spent a lot of time in their own half to start with. They would not give Lugano an inch anywhere else on the pitch however.

Going into the second half, the score remained at 0-0 for some time still. Only in the 47th minute, Lugano managed to break the defense down the right wing. Their excellent goal kicker converted the try to take the score to 0-7. There was no let-up in intensity from either side though. It took the Basel boys just three minutes to score a try themselves, with Sean Boult touching down after series of pick-and-go carries. With just under 20 minutes to play, Daniel Zinsstag converted a penalty to another three points and gave Basel a 10-7 lead.

With about five minutes left to play, another scrum penalty went against Basel. And for the first time they got three points' reward for their strong scrum. At 10-10, the tension was all over Pruntrutermatte. Lugano took the lead with another penalty kick shortly afterwards, but Basel were never going to give up. They worked their way back up the field, got a line-out five meters out and hammered Lugano's line. Basel players went in hard, the ball went down over the try line, Lugano hands went in. The referee's whistle went, but he gave it held up. A heroic fight ended in sight of the try line, but with a final score of 10-13 in favour of Lugano.

Now the boys have a weekend without a game before we finally take the show on the road with an away game in Fribourg on 1 November 2025.

Entsprechend verbrachten sie viel Zeit in der eigenen Hälfte. War zur Abwechslung einmal kein Gedränge im Gang, wurde aber kein Zentimeter verschenkt.

Selbst in der zweiten Halbzeit blieb es noch eine Weile beim 0:0. Erst nach 47 Minuten brach Lugano einmal über den rechten Flügel durch. Dank der erfolgreichen Erhöhung des ausgezeichneten Goal-Kickers stand es 0:7 für Lugano. Doch weiterhin war es eine Begegnung auf Augenhöhe. Basel brauchte nur drei Minuten für den Ausgleich. Sean Boult erzielte den Versuch nach mehreren Pick-and-Goes, Daniel Zinsstag kickte den Ball für zwei weitere Punkte durch die Stangen. Mit noch rund 20 Minuten auf der Uhr traf er gleich noch einmal, zum Stand von 10:7.

In der Schlussphase kam es zu einer weiteren Strafe gegen das Basler Gedränge. Erstmals war auch der Kicker von Lugano mit einer Strafe erfolgreich. Bei 10:10 war die Spannung auf der Pruntrutermatte allen Anwesenden anzusehen. Lugano brachte sich mit einer weiteren Strafe sogar in Führung, doch Basel hatte auf keinen Fall vor, dieses Spiel zu verlieren. Noch einmal ging es in Richtung Try-Linie von Lugano. Nach einem Einwurf fünf Meter vor der Linie warfen die Basler Forwards noch einmal alles rein. Mit dem Ball in der Hand ging es soweit nach vorne wie nur möglich. Dann ein Pfiff des Schiedsrichters - und ein bitteres Ende dieses heroischen Kampfes. Die Partie ging mit 10:13 an Lugano.

Diese Woche haben die Jungs eine Pause, bevor es am 1. November mit einem Auswärtsspiel in Fribourg weitergeht.
