The clubhouse at Pruntrutermatte showed its full value on Saturday, hosting an impromptu triple header. What was meant to be a double header against NSRV and RC Bern turned into a triple header thanks to the GC Valkyries moving their home game against the Birds to Basel. Softened up just perfectly by the rain and other precipitation throughout the week, the pitch was perfect for a triple offering of Basel's finest rugby. And after some great training sessions, the players were more than ready.

Early tries once again set the tone on Pruntrutermatte, with Colm Geogheghan and then Sean Boult crossing the line. Captain Sean played his 50th match for Basel and joined Colm in scoring a hat trick. The scores came after some great team work, with numbers 1 to 15 contributing with big carries, slick passes, precise kicking and much more. A special mention goes to Marcus Fialkowski in his 101st game for Basel, having completed the century of matches the weekend before in the win against Albaladejo.

Bern managed their first and only score in the first half, after about 30 minutes. Their goal kicker nailed a penalty kick right in front, but also pulled a muscle and had to go off. With two of their most influential backs out of the game already, Bern were facing a long afternoon in the rain. Basel scored a fourth try before half-time, bringing the score to 28-7. Daniel Zinsstag was spotless off the tee and little did we know by then that he would eventually come up with a kicking performance of 9 from 9 attempts!

In the second half, the backs joined in on the try scoring fun. Ben Brown's nice cross-field kick was picked up by Matthew Quinn. The speedy winger ran in his second try in as many games for Basel. Tristan Keuning intercepted a pass to feed Santiago Zanon who was equally quick to cross the line on the other wing. With Mauro Gschwind on in his 50th game for Basel, the back line saw a re-shuffle. Playing one spot closer to the set-piece, Ben Brown latched onto a pass from Sean Boult to score the final try for the Rugby Basel Men's 1st XV. The 63-3 win helped to consolidate the second position in the NLB table, helped by Albaladejo's slip-up in Fribourg the same day. Next up for the 1st XV is a trip to Neuchâtel on 11 April, where the Basel boys could already secure a semi-final berth.

Das Clubhaus auf der Pruntrutermatte bewies am Samstag seinen vollen Wert. Aus einem Doppelheimspiel wurde spontan ein dreifaches Heimspiel, da auch die Birds gegen die GC Valkyries zu Hause spielen durften. Der Platz war nach den Niederschlägen unter der Woche angenehm ein wenig weicher und die Spieler waren nach sehr guten Trainings mehr als nur bereit.

Wie schon vor sechs Tagen in Lausanne lenkte Basel früh das Spiel in seine Richtung. Colm Geogheghan und Sean Boult legten früh schon den Ball in der Endzone ab. Sean in seinem 50. Spiel für Basel legte ebenso einen Hattrick wie Colm. Die Versuche waren das Resultat toller Teamarbeit, von der Nummer 1 bis zur Nummer 15. Wichtige Beiträge kamen dabei unter anderem von Marcus Fialkowski, der in der Vorwoche in Lausanne sein 100. Spiel für Basel bestritten hatte.

Nach einer halben Stunde kam Bern zu den ersten und einzigen Punkten in dieser ansonsten einseitigen Partie. Leider verletzte sich dabei auch noch der Kicker und mit zwei einflussreichen Backs weniger wurde der Kampf im Regen noch schwerer. Basel ging mit einer Pausenführung von 28:7 Punkten kurz in die Garderobe. Daniel Zinsstag stach mit besonders präzisen Erhöhungs-Kicks hervor. Bis zum Ende sollten es neun Treffer bei neun Versuchen sein!

Die Basler Backs vermochten in der zweiten Halbzeit ebenfalls fleissig zu punkten. Ben Browns cleverer Kick auf den Flügel landete in den Händen von Matthew Quinn, der für die Berner Verteidigung viel zu schnell war. Tristan Keuning fing in der Manier von Jean de Villiers einen Berner Pass ab und bediente Santiago Zanon, der auf dem linken Flügel ebenfalls schneller als alle Gegner war. Mauro Gschwind wurde zu seinem 50. Spiel für Basel eingewechselt, was eine Reorganisation der Basler Hintermannschaft auslöste. Nun etwas näher am Geschehen bei den Standards wurde Ben Brown von Sean Boult bedient und legte den neunten und letzten Versuch für Basel ab. Das 63:3 gegen Bern zementiert Basels zweiten Platz in der Tabelle der NLB, hinter Lugano und dank Albas Niederlage in Fribourg mit einem kleinen Polster auf den dritten Platz. Das nächste Spiel für die 1st XV der Männer steht am 11. April auswärts in Neuchâtel an.
