Double headers are more fun. So, after the 1st XV's tight loss, the Future Team could go revenge straight away. Although, with the match documents from the visitors only arriving late, they had to wait a few extra minutes until their kickoff in the autumn sunshine at Pruntrutermatte. In some ways, the game took a similar pattern to the NLB match earlier. A stalemate beckoned, with the scores at 3-3 shortly before half-time. At least the structure of the game was ever so slightly different. Set pieces mattered less (limited pushing in scrums at NLD level, mind you) and it was more about the players expressing themselves in open play. Julian Revenstorff, nicely kicking the ball off both feet all afternoon long, fooled the Lugano defense just before the break and ran in a great try from about 22m out. With his own conversion, the score went up to 10-3.

In the second half, the match became a numbers game. Basel had a number of substitutes available on the bench, who came in to great effect. Cramps and niggles added up on both sides, but hit Lugano decidedly harder, with a fair number of players doubling up after the NLB match. For Basel, the recently lesser spotted Gian Rinne scored two late tries for a great 22-3 win that then got celebrated until the Birds returned from their successful trip to Thun.

The Future Team has three more games to play this year, with the next one coming away in Bellinzona on 1 November.

Doppelspiele machen einfach mehr Spass - vor allem wenn das Future Team nach einer knappen Niederlage für die 1st XV sofort Revanche nehmen kann. Ein wenig Geduld war dennoch gefragt, denn die Gäste lieferten ihre Papiere für das Spiel sehr spät ab. Bei wunderschöner Herbstsonne auf der Pruntrutermatte schien es eine Weile lang ähnlich zu laufen wie zuvor in der NLB. Kurz vor der Pause stand es 3:3. Allerdings waren vor allem Gedränge viel weniger ausschlaggebend (schliesslich darf man in der NLD auch nicht so weit schieben) und die Spieler konnten sich mehr im offenen Feld messen. Unmittelbar vor dem Seitenwechsel narrte der ansonsten vor allem mit beidfüssigen Kicks auffällige Julian Revenstorff die Verteidigung der Luganesi und legte einen wunderschönen Try aus 22 Metern. Mit seiner eigenen Erhöhung stand es 10:3 zur Pause.

In der zweiten Halbzeit spielte die Anzahl der Spieler eine grosse Rolle. Basel hatte noch einige Einwechselspieler, während bei Lugano etliche Spieler zuvor schon in der NLB im Einsatz gestanden hatten. Krämpfe und andere Bobos wurden immer zahlreicher, doch Basel kam deutlich besser davon. Gian Rinne, erstmals in dieser Saison im Einsatz, legte in der Schlussphase noch zwei Versuche, sodass das Spiel mit 22:3 für das Future Team ausging. Der Sieg wurde noch lange gefeiert, bis auch die Birds von ihrem erfolgreichen Spiel in Thun zurück waren.

Das Future Team hat in diesem Jahr noch drei weitere Spiele zu bestreiten. Das nächste Spiel findet am 1. November in Bellinzona statt.
