For the last game of the 25/26 season, Basel Birds took the long trip to Geneva to play Cern Wildcats. A very early start and a squad of 13 players would have dampened any team's spirits but we all had a shared goal of giving one last push and finishing the season on a high. Having some special fans with us and a guest coach (Andy K), gave us an extra boost.
The sun was out for our warm up, where we made some last minute adjustments to our 13-woman squad to best equip ourselves to face a 15-woman squad for 80 minutes!
We were first to light up the score board, 3 points from a penalty kick from Orla. Cern replied with a try but we soon followed suit. We kept a strong defence and made Cern fight for every inch. In attack we were explosive everywhere, strong through the centre, fast up the wings.
Half time and things were pretty even. Everyone was smiling and still had plenty of fight in them. 13 against 15 was not easy but we kept going. A few more tries from both teams kept thing very close, but a few unfortunate held-up tries led to a final score of 39-35 for Cern.
All 13 players left the field feeling happy with their efforts in a game many other teams would have forfeited, knowing they had given 110%. It was great to see such team spirit and connection on the field. Old favourites and up and coming new players joining together to show what the Basel Birds are.
Onwards and upwards for the next season!
